Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This past summer I had the privilege and opportunity to see first hand the work of God in a place that I never expected to personally see it, in Kerala, India. Please allow me to tell you about it and how it even came about.

This was my first time in India. In some ways it was what I expected and in other ways far different. India is a third-world country and, with close to 1 billion people, has the second largest population in the world. India is a highly educated country, but the lack of development and modern infrastructure provided stark contrasts. On the one hand they have modern computers and internet connections, but on the other hand the electricity goes out daily, at both scheduled and unscheduled times! Travel is slow and difficult and the standard of living is so much lower than what we have in the US that any comparison is simply futile. That a person could live and support a family on the equivalent of $200 US per month is truly baffling.

What I found most surprising was the freedom of Christians to worship, study and share their faith. The official policy of India is freedom of religion, although the open persecution of Christians in many areas seems to negate this law. Yet in the state of Kerala, there is enough freedom of religion that Kerala Theological Seminary is able to exist.

Currently approximately 55 students are being trained by a
team of 14 full-time and part-time instructors in a course of
study that is basically the same as you would find at a Bible
College in the US. What is different is that the students live
and study at KTS for a very small yearly registration fee
(around $25.00 US) and when they graduate have no
expectation whatsoever of finding a paid ministry position.

KTS is located in a little village called Kottarakkarra in a
facility that was originally a hospital. Although the building
was not designed as a school, they make due. In addition to
the main building where the students and some faculty live,
they have a large building that functions as chapel, dining
hall and study hall and various other temporary meeting
rooms. They are in the process of building a new building, as
the Lord provides, specifically designed for the needs of the
   school.

What impressed me most was the vitality of the faith of
students and faculty and their servants attitude. All the
students are involved in personal ministry, not because it is
required, but because it is what they are called to do. Many
are starting churches that they travel to on weekends.
Everyone is walking by faith. Not faith that a supporting
church will send in a donation. There are no supporting
churches in India for the students. Just faith that God will
supply their every need, which He graciously does each
   month.

I cannot encourage you strongly enough to consider
supporting the work of God at the Kerala Theological
Seminary. It is a worthy task that God is clearly blessing.

In His Grace,  Rev. Ward Cushman
